What will Doppler radar not detect? ›

It's widely known that RADAR systems are not able to detect stationary objects, only moving ones.

The National Weather Service's 148 WSR-88D Doppler radars can detect most precipitation within approximately 90 mi of the radar, and intense rain or snow within approximately 155 mi. However, light rain, light snow, or drizzle from shallow cloud weather systems are not necessarily detected.

The radar's computers will calculate the shift and determine whether the precipitation is moving toward or away from the radar, and how fast, then apply a corresponding color to those directions and speeds. Red is typically a target moving away from the radar, while green is applied to targets moving toward the radar.

Doppler radar is a specific type of radar system that can detect all types of precipitation, the rotation of thunderstorm clouds, airborne tornado debris, and wind strength and direction.

On a weather radar map, a tornado is usually indicated by a smaller area of red surrounded by a larger area of green. However, modern radar systems can also indicate debris balls, a sign of a tornado on the ground.

Red shows winds blowing away from the radar, and green shows winds blowing toward it. Stronger winds usually equate to brighter colors on the radar imagery. You can spot rotation and a possible tornado in a thunderstorm by looking for strong winds blowing in different directions right next to each other.

We can see from this illustration that the Doppler effect is produced only by a motion toward or away from the observer, a motion called radial velocity. Sideways motion does not produce such an effect.

They can't track multiple fast-moving small targets

Unlike the manned aircraft that most radars are designed to detect, drones are controlled remotely. This means they can fly evasively or erratically at varying speeds, even in harsh weather like fog or storms, making them much harder to detect.
