a 18. Archibald MacLeish dies at 89 Death Notices FROM PAGE A-1, he was one of the half dozen major poets of the last 40 years, in England or America," said Walter Jackson Bate, a Harvard professor of English. "And he also was unusual in combining his poetry writing with being what you might call a man of affairs. He knew the whole world of government." MacLeish won his first Pulitzer in 1933 for his long poem "Conquistador" and a second in 1952 for his Poems 1924-1952." His third Pulitzer in 1958 was for the verse play "J.B." The play, along with several others he wrote, were produced on Broadway. He also authored a number of radio and television dramas.

He won a host of awards besides the Pulitzers, including the National Book Award, the National Medal for Literature, and the Bollingen Prize in Poetry. He received many honorary college degrees and decorations from other countries, including the French Legion of Honor. Professor at Harvard A professor of rhetoric and oratory at Harvard for 23 years, he also lectured at Amherst College and Cambridge University in England and was poet in residence at Princeton University from 1936 to 1937. He retired from Harvard in 1972, but continued to lecture and pursue other projects. MacLeish was known for his tremendous drive.

He told an interviewer in 1968, "The thing for other people to realize is a man of 76 can be doing such new and exciting work. Life, really, as long as you have mind and some health, just goes on being better and better every year." Born in Glencoe, May 7, 1892, MacLeish attended the Hotchkiss School and graduated from Yale University in 1915. It was in Paris that he fell i in love with the story of the Spanish conquest of Mexico. In 1929, after.

leaving his family in Chicago, he went to Mexico to retrace the steps of the Spanish forces. "Conquistador," published in 1929, was the result. "Poetry is a means of knowing," MacLeish said during a 1976 television interview. "It's a means of knowing the kind of thing that can only be known emotionally that can't be analyzed, taken apart, spelled out, and put back together again. "Its great triumph is that when it succeeds, which it does much less often than it thinks or anybody else thinks, it makes the unbearable bearable because one sees it at last.

One feels it." MacLeish had made the point many years before. In one of his most famous poems, "Ars Poetica," written in 1926, he said, "A poem should not mean, but be." Active role in politics MacLeish believed artists and professionals should take an active part in politics. In a 1948 address, he referred to the cold war between the Soviet Union and the Western powers and said: "It is a 'war' of which the battlefield i is men's minds the minds of all men everywhere and in which the weapons are the things by which men's minds are moved." During World War II, he directed the Office of Facts and Figures and was assistant director of its successor organization, the Office of War Information.
